Aly and AJ have had a passion for music since they were very young. "I think it started when we were three and five. Just singing in church together and in school plays", Aly said. Both girls started out singing in church and in school. That later moved onto just AJ as Aly started to act very early, when AJ was nine years old (2000). Today, the two sisters consider themselves "the first set of twins to be born two years apart," according to AJ. Aly is also seen on Phil of the Future, and both sisters star in the movie Cow Belles on the Disney Channel. The two sisters (who both also play guitar) are effectively a Pop rock band. In a 2006 Blender magazine interview Aly states, "We don't ever wanna preach or shove anything down people's throats, but AJ and I want our music to be inspiring". AJ continues, "We don't want to exclude anybody". The sisters both live in a multimillion dollar mansion in Calabasas, California with their parents. Their mother, Carrie Michalka, used to sing in a Christian group called "J.C. Band", and their father, Mark, owns a contracting company.
